Vardø VTS

Vardø VTS is the fifth VTS established by the Norwegian Coastal Administration in 2007. The VTS monitors and coordinates tanker and other hazardous traffic in the area extending from Rørvik in the south to the border with Russia in the north, in addition to the seaward approach to Melkøya and the Port of Hammerfest.

The VTS Centre in Vardø has the following main tasks:

  • Monitoring ship movements; this involves recording, identifying and uncovering any anomalies
  • Preventing incidents by maintaining an ongoing dialogue with vessel traffic
  • Taking action and giving the alert when the situation requires
  • Administering tugboat preparedness in Northern Norway

To enable it to discharge this responsibility safely and efficiently, the VTS Centre in Vardø is equipped with new technology in the field of surveillance, communication and crisis management.
