 The Norwegian Coastal Administration ensures the adherence to various national legislation, such as the Plan and Construction Act and the Harbour Act.

According to international rules, upon arriving or leaving the EEA area, all vessels carrying dangerous and/or polluting cargo are under obligation to report specific facts about their cargo. This information is registered by SafeSeaNet, a reporting service run by the Norwegian Coastal Administration. 

On behalf of the Royal Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs the Norwegian Coastal Administration is the authority that ensures the implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) in Norwegian harbour terminals, based on standards set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
