VTS in Norway

There are five Vessel Traffic Service centres in Norway. And in 2007 the latest VTS centre became operational in the northern town of Vardø, close to the Russian border.

VTS centres in Norway have three main tasks:

1. Monitor all ship movements - register and identify
2. Communicate with vessels
3. React and respond when incidents occur
